TV DRAMA: TRAVELLERS

How film language creates representations in US TV drama: we analyse an extract from Travellers (Season 2, Episode 1)

Focus of lesson: taking each aspect in turn so that comparisons and contrasts are drawn between different settings, lighting, props, clothes and so on to create different representations.

Skills: remember T terminology, E example (offer three aspects of each example), EAA explanation, analysis argument
For example: "The high angle shot (T) of Nesta facing the huge transport lorry positions her as diminutive in the frame (E). This contrast makes her look both vulnerable and brave as she faces the lorry square on, feet planted firmly and hands composed.(EAA).
Mise-en-scene: lighting (realism, rim lighting, candlelight); casting (age, gender); props (technical, bomb, trucks); sets (different 'homes' ranging from affluent to squat)

Camerawork: high angle (shows contrast in sizes); silhouette; focus pull; ECU; two-shot

Editing: shot / reverse shot; match cuts; countdown in analogue font

Sound: orchestral fast-paced loops in soundtrack creating tension, jeopardy, suspense; delicate tympany creating budding romance.
