MEDIA ECOLOGY : LEARN ON TIKTOK

We start by reminding ourselves of Mashall McLuhan's framework of the Tetrads.

We apply what we had considered yesterday about one single technology, the smartphone, and what it can do now for us that demonstrates how much it is a convergent platform that has superseded older technologies with brilliant applications that consumers love:

streaming, camera and video, photo storage, gaming, navigation, paying bills, Apps in general, ride-shares, virtual assistant, snapchat, shopping, music, Tinder, Apple Watch connectivity...

and the ways in which it may turn out to have disadvantages:

cookies, personal info for sale, addiction...

So how does the development and use of the smartphone reflect McLuhan's ideas?

Yesterday we watched a presentation on one aspect of new technology, Tiktok. We learned that Tiktok has taken the world by storm and is now used for a myriad of different purposes, such as engaging younger audiences in visiting museums like Florence's Uffizi Art Gallery. In the UK, one of Tiktok's partners is English Heritage, a charity that manages hundreds of historic sites. They see its potential in engaging younger audiences in relevant issues like Black History, women's role in history, LGBTQ stories.

Our task today is to create an educational short video on one technology, such as the smartphone, with the audience of our own class in mind. Try to reference McLuhan's tetrad.
